About Us

Beer. We all like it, though there are some little-known facts about how it gets from the brewery to your lips out there. When most people think of beer, what comes to mind tends to be horses, neon lights, and marketing mascots. It can be difficult to fathom the color and diversity of what beer can be in its most simplistic and original form, exemplified by the art of homebrewing.

When you make your own beer, you can decide what direction it's going to take. Only you know your tastes intimately, and only you can create beers that can truly please your palate. If you leave the brewing up to those who have staked their livelihood on it, you allow them to tell you what to like and dislike. Don't let them!

Our intention is to spread the word about good beer and demonstrate how easy it is to make beer that conforms to your tastes. Beer is the oldest fermented beverage on earth and can be one of the tastiest - yet this happens only when the brewer aims to please. Commercial brews tend to raise their alcohol level by adding cheaper, less flavorful grains such as rice or corn.

It doesn't take too much effort to make beer yourself that satisfies you better than most things that you can buy at the grocery store. handful of grain

Our Mission:

In the interest of brewing affordable, quality beer, five people founded the North State Brewers' Co-operative in the summer of 1997. We are dedicated to education through hands-on experience. Originally formed by University of Michigan students, the Co-op has an open membership policy.

Press

On April 9th, 1998, The Michigan Daily wrote an article profiling the brewers' co-op.

The Ann Arbor News wrote an article about the AABG (Ann Arbor Brewer's Guild) and briefly mentioned the co-op.

Awards!

On May 16, 1999, we won some awards at the Rochester Mills, "Over the Mill" homebrew competition. With 380 entries, this was the largest homebrewing competition in the state of Michigan.

Organization

We loosely follow our constitution, and bylaws. These both need to be drastically overhauled, but we still maintain some of the traditions and organizational structure put down by the founding fathers back in the summer of 1997.

Much more historical information is available.
